This is Funkie, my four month old juvenile male shama. He came to me at about a month old from his breeder, my friend David de Souza. He is now entering into the early phase of his first molt. This dull looking youngster will undergo a complete makeover from this first molt, emerging from the transformation wearing the attractive full colors of the adult male white-rumped shama. He looked really ruffled up and untidy at this stage of the molt. This video was taken 9 days ago.
hello jeffrey, thank you for such an informative blog about shamas. i keep finches at home but after reading and listening to the songs of shamas from your blog and those of mr david de souza, i now have 2 shamas at home.
first one is of adult plumage already, shop told me that is still a yound bird. it does call and sing. the second bird i just purchased yesterday is taimong between 1 to 2 months age, still having juvenile plumage. shop said that i already can sing its subsong. today i heard for the first time its call. the call is not melodic and not rounded. its like william hung as compared to say a michael buble. should i be worried or is the baby bird learning to call and in time the call note will be melodic and rounded.
hope you can help, as i do not have the experience.
your fav videos are my favourites too, so i guess we must be about the same age group, cheers!
good morning jeffrey. thanks for the advice about my taimong. so its just like a baby learninng to talk and says words for the first time. they come out as garbled and in time it will be ok. thanks again.
It starts from the subsongs which provide lots of song materials for the juvenile male to form the more structured and louder juvenile songs. These are quite flat in pitch and are the ones your taimong is currently singing. From here, these will be further developed to eventually become the adult songs of his repertoire.

Taimong songs are just like what you described so don't worry about it. It will change later.
